Indicator Phrasing

INDICATOR PHRASING: Percentage of people in the project area who profess trust in those from other faith or ethnic groups

What is its purpose?

To assess the level of trust between groups that are generally suspicous or fearful of each other or that have a history of conflict between each other as a way of assessing whether divisons are increasing or decreasing.

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

Collected as part of a survey.  Typical questions could ask the extent to which respondents agreed or disagreed with the following statements:

  1. I have taken part in a social event with someone from [insert name of an opposing group] within the previous month.

  2. I have taken part in a business transaction with someone from [insert name of an opposing group] within the previous month

  3. I would not object if - when they were of the right age - my child married someone from [insert name of an opposing group].

  4. If I had a choice I would not choose to work with people from [insert name of an opposing group]

  5. I trust people from [insert name of an opposing group]

  6. I trust people who have different religious values to me

  7. I trust people who have different political affiliations to me

For analysis a simpe percentage should be taken of the number of respondents reporting that they agree or strongly agree with the statement.  Care should be taken in deciding whether this percentage applies to just those surveyed or whther it can be ascribed to the population as a whole.  This will depend on the design of the survey and whether it was a representative sample of the population.

Disaggregate by

Gender, age group and group as standard.  Depending on context and design the data could also be disaggregated by other relevent social identity markers.

Important Comments

This indicator can be contextualised to focus on faith (as for the second question), ethnicity or other identity marker as appropriate.
