INDICATOR PHRASING: average number of school days lost per child due to children having diarrhoeal diseases in the past 2 weeks
What is its purpose?
The indicator assesses one of the main socio-economic impacts of diarrhoeal diseases - children's inability to attend school due to having diarrhoea.
How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data
Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with a representative sample of the children's primary caregivers:
RECOMMENDED SURVEY QUESTIONS (Q) AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS (A)
Ask the following questions and record the answers in the form below:
Q1: Can you please tell me the names of those of your children who in the past 2 weeks went to primary or secondary school?
A1: Record the answer in the table below
Q2: In the past 2 weeks, was there a day when [say the name of the first child] could not go to school due to having diarrhoea?
A2: record the answer in the table below
(ask the following question only if the previous answer is YES)
Q3: In the past 2 weeks, for how many days could [say the name of the first child] NOT go to school due to having diarrhoea?
A3: record the answer in the table below
Repeat questions Q2 and Q3 for all other children who in the past 2 weeks went to primary or secondary school.
Children who went to School: Child1 - Child 2
Q2: Was s/she NOT able to attend school due to having diarrhoea?
Q3: For how many days could s/he not go to school?
To calculate the indicator's value, sum up the total number of school days lost due to diarrhoea among the surveyed children and divide it by the total number of surveyed children (exclude those where the respondents did not remember).
Disaggregate the data by gender.
Ensure that 2 weeks before the survey there were no major school holidays – otherwise you will not be able to collect the required data.
